Koshoryu Kenpo
Koshoryu Kenpo was brought to this part of
the world by James Mitose. Born in 1916 on the island of
Hawaii, at the age of 5, he was sent to Kyushu, Japan for
schooling in his ancestors art of Koshoryu Kenpo. Kenpo
training in its entirety consisted of intensive instruction
in:
- Buddhist philosophy
- General education
- Anatomy & physiology
- Kendo
- Kyudo
- Swimming
- Climbing
- Horsemanship
- Weaponless forms of self-defense
The Mitose family in Kunamoto and Nagasaki,
brought the knowledge of Chuanfa (kenpo) from china shortly
before the Tokugawa period around 1600 AD. This art was
modified through the years by successive Mitose kenpo masters
until the Koshoryu style was born. The teachings of Buddhism
were fundamental to the physical manifestations of the Koshoryu
fighting art. The development of restraint, humbleness and
integrity are the cornerstones of Koshoryu kenpo.
Mitose acquired his training in a large temple
on Mt. AKENKAI in southern Japan. Studying with his grandfather.
Mitose taught on the island of Kyushu for a couple of years,
mostly the police. Because of japans' trends towards expansionism
and militaristic government, Mitose often spoke out against
their policy of expansion. Mitose left Japan on the advice
of friends who were policeman, who were afraid they would
be ordered to arrest him for his statements against the
government. So Mitose returned to Hawaii, and in 1941, Mitose
join the Hawaiian territorial national guard after the Japanese
attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1942 Mitose formed the "official
self-defense club" at the Beretania mission in Honolulu.

James m. Mitose (1916-1981)
Mitose had two
stand out students who were promoted to the rank of black
belt they were Thomas Young and William K. S. Chow. Mitose
taught for approximately ten years after this before leaving
for the mainland to pursue his studies in theology. The
school was taken over by Thomas Young, who probably reflected
Mitose's teaching philosophy. William chow had already opened
other schools and was teaching his own system by this time.
The "official self-defense school" had become
part of the American jujitsu institute as a branch under
Thomas Young and still exist under the direction of at first
Prof. Simeon Eli, an original Mitose student who has since
passed away, and now under Charley Lee, a student of Prof.
ELI.
Mitose's life ended in tragedy in 1981.
Mitose was sent to prison for conspiracy to commit murder.
He had gotten into some trouble in the Los Angeles area.
